Another trip to Leeds this weekend resulted in a debut trip to Canal Mills for their Halloween event ‘The Mills Have Eyes’.

To say I’ve been up to Leeds a number of times I’m surprised it’s taken this long for me attend a night at Canal Mills. The line-up featured Jonas Rathsman, People Get Real, Benji B, Dungeon Meat and a UK exclusive from Paul Woolford in a versus performance with his bass music alias Special Request. Woolford is one of my favourite dj’s as it is, and the tunes he’s been releasing under the Special Request moniker on XL Recordings made it an even bigger certainty for me to attend.

We arrived at about 10:30pm. The venue had been done up to suit the festivities; projected images of bats flying around the room, disturbing human silhouttes hanging themselves and a stage that resembled a graveyard. We stood and watched People Get Real play a quality set to an empty room before people began to flood in as Jonas Rathsman took over the decks.

He played a sublime mixture of house and techno. Earl Jeffers ’round ‘n’ round mix’ of Doc Daneeka’s ‘What’s It Gonna Be’ and KiNK’s remix of Dj Dozia’s ‘Pop Culture’ being amongst my favourites.

Dungeon Meat followed suit in sending the dancefloor into madness before Paul Woolford took over at about 2:30am. This was the third time I’ve seen him and definitely the best. Dj’ing under both aliases brought some pleasant surprises. His own remix of Josh Wink & Lil Louis’ ‘How’s Your Evening So Far?’ completely blew the roof off.

I wanted to watch Benji B but Woolford’s set had killed us off so we left. He’s on the Curated by HudMo lineup at WHP in December though so I wasn’t too bothered.

Another top drawer night, definitely up there with Caribou & Four Tet at WHP last Halloween.
