As I was returning to Uni this week after a lengthy Christmas break, I felt an early birthday night out was in order. Friday night saw Sankeys host D Double E, Sir Spyro, Jammer & Chimpo; with warm up sets from J69 & Livesy and Mike D Fekt.

We arrived around 12am in time for Mike D Fekt, who set the mood through a solid selection of bassline. Originals ‘Circles’ and ‘The Test’ battered the soundsystem, with tracks such as ‘Holy Goof – Bossy’ and Woz’s remix of ‘Maxta – I Wanna Rock’ adding to the mayhem.

Next up was Jammer; I’ve never seen the Murkle Man live so I knew I was in for a treat. I don’t remember a great deal due to the hype, but I know he sent the crowd insane with Boy Better Know’s version of ‘I Don’t Like’; oh, and how could I forget ‘Royal Rumble’ being reloaded about four times. Sick.

Sir Spyro took over the decks from 2:00-3:00, delivering some massive dubs. From his remix of ‘Rude Kid – Voices’ to ‘Tekkerz’, he stole the show. The batman dub ‘Bruce Wayne’ even made an appearance later on in the set. Brilliant performance from one of my favourite grime producers.

At 3:00, the man of the moment took the stage. Arguably my favourite grime artist of all time (in contention with Wiley and Dizzee of course), every track D Double E is on is pure gold, from Newham Generals to a vast array of features to solo material. In a thirty minute set, he managed to play pretty much all of my favourite tracks: ‘Bluku Bluku’, ‘Street Fighter Riddim’, ‘Bad 2 Tha Bone’, ‘Wolly’, ‘Lovely Jubbly’, the lot. His new tune on Formula Records ‘Like This’ also got a spin, much to my delight. Daft set. Oh my goshhhhhhh.

I didn’t see much of Chimpo’s set because I was looking for my mate for a good hour, which is shit because it sounded hard. Overall though, the best night I’ve had in a while, the best ever in a usually child-ridden Sankeys. I’ll leave you with this banger.

Peace.
